  • Does your change have the potential to stand the test of time?
  • Is your change replicable or long-term?

Get votes

  • Ask your friends, family and community to vote for your change!

Get pledges of support

  • Have other people contribute materials, resources, or financial support to your idea.
  • For example, you can solicit local businesses and organizations to contribute additional funds if you win.
  • See if you can get local businesses to match the grant if you win. So, if you win $500, the business agrees to donate an additional $500.

Submission Guidelines

  • Must be 13 or older
  • Resident of the city of Boston or Greater Boston communities: Chelsea, Lynne, Waltham, Cambridge, Brookline, Revere and Somerville
  • Video must be no longer than 5 minutes and created for the purposes of this competition
  • Competition closes on March 25, 2008 at midnight
  • First round of voting will open March 31st and close April 6th
  • The final round will open April 7th and close on April 13th
  • A winner will be notified the week of April 14
  • Winner will be announced and publicly acknowledges on April 19

OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES

Read this document carefully. The Official Contest Rules constitute a binding agreement between you, any contributors to your video, all people appearing in your video, and the Sponsor of this Contest. By submitting your Contest Entry Form, you are indicating that you and all the contributors and people appearing in your video (collectively the “Participants”) have read this document, that you understand this document, and that you have authority from all the Participants to bind all of the Participants to all of its terms. Your Contest Entry Form will not be accepted unless all of the Participants read and agree to these rules.

If you or any other Participant are under the age of 18, you must show this document to the Participant’s parent or legal guardian and you must obtain the permission of the Participant’s parent or legal guardian to enter the Contest. If a Participant does not have parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to enter this Contest, you are ineligible to participate in this Contest and you should not submit a Contest Entry Form.

If you or any other Participant are under the age of 13, you are not eligible for this Contest and you should not submit a Contest Entry Form.

No purchase is necessary to enter or win this contest. Void where prohibited or restricted by law.

1. Entry Period:
Project: Think Different’s “What is Change?” contest (the “Contest”) will commence at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (”EST”) on February 1, 2008, and will end at 11:59 p.m. EST on March 25, 2008 (the “Contest Period”). All entries must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. EST on March 25, 2008.

2. Sponsor:
Project: Think Different, 14 Beacon Street, Suite 503, Boston, MA 02108.

3. Eligibility:
All entries must be complete to be eligible. Contest entries will be void if they are incomplete, late, lost, damaged, or cannot be viewed due to a technical error.

Only one entry per person will be accepted.

The Contest is open only to legal residents of the city of Boston and the Greater Boston area who are 13 years of age or older as of February 1, 2008. For the purposes of this Contest, the Greater Boston area only includes Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Lynn, Revere, Somerville, and Waltham. All Contest Participants under the age of 18 are required to obtain parental or legal guardian permission to participate in this Contest.

Employees, independent contractors, and volunteers of Project: Think Different, including their immediate family members and those living in the same household, are not eligible to enter the Contest.

The video submitted for the Contest must be your original work and created solely for the purpose of the Contest. The video must be 4 to 6 minutes in length. Contest entries will be disqualified if the video submitted contains other’s trademarks or copyright-protected works, or materials that are used or submitted elsewhere, or contain any obscene, defamatory, or other offensive or inappropriate content. The Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any entries which the Sponsor, at its sole discretion, determines to be inconsistent with its standards, reputation or expectations.

4. How to Enter:
If you or any other Participant are under the age of 18, you must show this document to the Participant’s parent or legal guardian and you must obtain the permission of the Participant’s parent or legal guardian to enter the Contest.

To enter the Contest, you must (1) create a video 4 to 6 minutes in length addressing why change is an important issue this election year and what change you would like to see in your community; (2) log onto www.youtube.com and upload your video submission; (3) complete all of the required fields on the Contest Entry Form located at http://www.whatischange.ptdec.org/. The Contest Entry Form requires you to state your name, address, and other information. You represent that this information is accurate and you consent to the use of any information provided in the Contest Entry Form by the Sponsor, its affiliates, collaborators, or those acting under their permission for any advertising, fundraising, and publicity purposes.

All completed Contest Entry Forms must be received by the Sponsor no later than 11:59 p.m. EST on March 25, 2008.

5. Semi-finalists, Finalists, and Winner Selection:
All submissions received within the Contest Period will be reviewed by a panel of independent and qualified judges. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria: content (30%), creativity (10%), and potential positive impact on the community (60%). The judges will choose ten semi-finalists from all qualified submissions.

Round One of On-Line Voting:
The videos submitted by the ten semi-finalists will be available at http://www.whatischange.ptdec.org/ from 12:00 a.m. EST on March 25, 2008 until 11:59 p.m. EST on April 6, 2008. During this time period, individuals visiting http://www.whatischange.ptdec.org/ will be able to vote for their favorite video submission. Only one vote per an e-mail address will be accepted. Based on the cumulative number of votes received during round one of on-line voting, five finalists will be chosen to advance to round two of on-line voting.

Round Two of On-Line Voting:
The videos submitted by the five finalists will be available at http://www.whatischange.ptdec.org/ from 12:00 a.m. EST on April 7, 2008 until 11:59 p.m. EST on April 13, 2008. During this time period, individuals visiting http://www.whatischange.ptdec.org/ will be able to vote for their favorite video submission. Only one vote per an e-mail address will be accepted. Based on the cumulative number of votes received during round two of on-line voting, one Winner will be chosen by the panel of judges.

6. Notification of Winner:
The Winner will be notified by e-mail or telephone during the week of April 14, 2008. If the potential Winner cannot be reached by 5:00 p.m. EST on April 18, 2008, the potential Winner will be disqualified from the Contest and an alternative Winner will be selected from the remaining four finalists.

The potential Winner must prove eligibility, including proof of age and residency within five days of being notified as a potential Winner. In the event of non-compliance by the potential Winner, he or she shall be disqualified from the Contest and an alternative Winner will be selected from the remaining four finalists.

7. Prize Acceptance:
The Winner must execute an affidavit of eligibility and release as required by the Sponsor by 5:00 p.m. EST on April 23, 2008. If the Winner is under 18 years of age, the Winner’s parent or legal guardian must execute the required documents for the Winner to receive the prize.

8. Prize and Limitation On Its Use:
One (1) cash prize of $500 to $750 will be awarded to the Winner, after all of the required documents are executed by the Winner or if the Winner is under the age of 18, after the required documents are executed by the Winner’s parent or legal guardian. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the Winner.

The cash prize awarded may only be used for the purpose of achieving the community change discussed in the Winner’s video submission. The Sponsor may require the Winner to provide proof that the cash prize was used to achieve the community change discussed in the winning video submission.

9. Acknowledgement/Release:
You and the other Participants agree that you are submitting your video in connection with the Sponsor’s Contest and related advertising, fundraising, and promotion in print, television and all other media. The Sponsor is under no obligation to use or publish your video submission in any manner. You and the other Participants understand and agree that none of the materials submitted by you will be returned to you. You and the other Participants release and hold harmless the Sponsor, its affiliates, collaborators, and those acting under their permission, from any and all claims that you may have in connection with your submission of the video or other material, the Sponsor, its affiliates, or collaborators use or publication of such materials, or otherwise in connection with this Contest.

10. Ownership and License:
You and the other Participants will retain ownership of the copyright and other intellectual property rights in the video that you submit. By submitting your video, however, you and the other Participants agree to grant, and hereby do grant, a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable right and license to reproduce, publicly perform, publicly display, edit, prepare derivative works of, distribute, or otherwise use the video, or portions of it, in any media now known or hereafter created or devised, for any reason. Sponsor may grant sublicenses of this license through multiple tiers to other organizations, entities and persons for purposes consistent with Sponsor’s non-profit mission.

11. Uses of the Video:
The Sponsor, its affiliates, collaborators, and those acting under their permission, can use your video without approval by you or any other Participant. The Sponsor, its affiliates, collaborators, and those acting under their permission, will be without liability to you or any other Participant, for any claims arising from the use of your video. The Sponsor will credit you for the creation of the video in accordance with industry practice.

12. Publicity:
By submitting a Contest Entry Form, you grant the Sponsor and its licensees and assigns, the irrevocable right, title, and license to use your and the other Participants’ name, likeness, voice, appearance, biographical information, trademark or tradename, and any information contained in your Contest Entry Form, including but not limited to your video submission, in connection with the Sponsor’s promotion, advertising, or fundraising activities. Sponsor may sublicense this right to any organization, entity and person to whom it sublicenses the video for the purposes of the sublicensee’s promotion and advertising of the video, in all cases for purposes consistent with Sponsor’s non-profit mission.

13. Your Representations and Warranties:
You and the other Participants each represent and warrant that (1) you and the other Participants are the exclusive owner(s) of each and every component of the video you are submitting for the Contest, (2) you have the full power, authority, and right to agree to the Official Contest Rules and to grant all of the rights granted in this document on behalf of yourself and the other Participants, including, without limitation, permission(s) from all talent appearing in your video, and any and all directors, producers, property owners and/or musicians associated with the video, and/or contributors of intellectual property included in the video; (3) the Sponsor’s use/ownership of the video as permitted under the Official Contest Rules will not infringe the rights of any third party, including but not limited to copyrights, trademark rights, “moral rights,” rights of privacy, rights of publicity and/or any other intellectual property rights; (4) the video is your fully original creation and it was created solely for the purpose of the Contest; (5) the video has not been previously published or used in any way by any third parties; and (6) you have obtained all required executed releases in connection with the video, including but not limited to prop releases, location releases, company/name releases, photo releases, talent releases and/or music releases. In the event any of the above representations and warranties are untrue or are breached, you will provide the Sponsor with all reasonable and necessary assistance in connection with securing releases, clearances, consents, and waivers from third parties in connection with the video.

14. Indemnity.
You and the other Participants agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless, the Sponsor, its affiliates, collaborators, and those acting under their permission, from and against any and all claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses, including but not limited to reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising out of your participation in the Contest. You and the other Participants acknowledge that the Sponsor will rely on your agreement to the Official Contest Rules and you and the other Participants agree not to bring any legal claim relating to this Contest against the Sponsor, its affiliates, collaborators, and those acting under their permission.

15. Governing Law:
The Official Contest Rules will be construed in accordance with and will be governed by the laws of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, without regard to conflict of law principles. All litigation arising from or relating to the Official Contest Rules will be initiated and prosecuted in any court of competent subject matter jurisdiction in Boston, Massachusetts.

16.Winner Name:
The name of the Winner will be posted on http://www.whatischange.ptdec.org/ by April 22, 2008. A copy of the Winner’s name may also be obtained by sending a written request to Project: Think Different, 14 Beacon Street, Suite 503, Boston, MA 02108. All written requests must be received no later than May 30, 2008.
17. Miscellaneous:
The odds of winning the Contest will be determined by the number of entries received by the Sponsor, but since the winner will be chosen by our judges it will ultimately be determined by the quality of your video, as perceived by our judges.

You and the other Participants agree that the Sponsor is not responsible for any technical, hardware, software, Internet, or other transmission failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, or incomplete, garbled, or delayed computer transmission whether caused by Sponsor, users, equipment, or human error. The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify or suspend the Contest at any time, if for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned, due to an infection by a computer virus, bug, tampering, technical failure, fraud, or any other cause beyond the Sponsor’s control.

If any provision of the Official Contest Rules shall be prohibited or adjudged by a court to be unlawful, void, or unenforceable such provision shall to the extent required by law be severed from the Official Contest Rules and rendered ineffective as far as possible without modifying the remaining provisions of the Official Contest Rules, and such provisions shall not in any way affect any other circumstances or the validity or enforcement of the Official Contest Rules.
